In what has to be arguably the most bizarre thing seen in recent history, a baby penguin was observed chasing Canadian Geese at Fair Play beach. No one knows how the penguin (which are native to Antarctica) ended up on the popular Lake Hartwell beach, but local resident Gilbert Alexander said it was possible that the penguin was blown in with the weather system that brought a brief episode of freezing rain to the area this morning. “Regardless of how it got here, my hats off to the little fella.” “It takes guts to take on a single goose, but this guy had them all out there stepping and fetching.” SONIC reached out to the SCDNR for their comments on this strange development. SCDNR Officials said not to worry about the geese, and that one of the Hartwell alligators would likely catch the penguin during the spring mating season, should they be unsuccessful in trapping it sooner. Wildlife Specialist Annie Krabbe said she’s not sure what to use to catch the baby penguin, but is excited about the prospect of being the first person ever to catch a penguin in the wild in South Carolina.
