Local man David Milburn has been selected by NASA and SpaceX for an accelerated training program in preparation for a 2024 Falcon Heavy launch. The mission is a combined effort of NASA and SpaceX to send a human within reach of another planetary body in our solar system. Our target is Mars.... Mr. Milburn will be launched in a Falcon Heavy Rocket in 2024 on a journey through space and into an orbit around the Red Planet for a period of 6 days and then return safely to earth. The total space exploration mission time will take approximately 8 months to complete. In 2024 there is a brief window for perfect planetary alignments that can accelerate a manned space craft to Mars in as little as 4 months. "This will be a solo mission, as our goal is to get Mr. Milburn there as fast as possible; and if you want to go fast you have to reduce spacecraft weight, so we need to limit all resources and weight for this mission, thus making this solo mission the most stream lined approach." Elon Musk quoted on Wednesday.
An additional unmanned Falcon Heavy will be launched in 2023, about 5 month prior to Mr. Milburns launch. The additional craft will be in orbit around mars upon the arrival of the primary mission. This additional launch will provide a docking hub for refueling and supplies for the return trip home.
A press conference with Mr. Milburn will be taking place March 23rd at NASA HQ.
