CBS CEO George Cheeks announces sweeping 'reimagining' of the entire Trek universe

[LOS ANGELES, CA] CBS/Viacom's new CEO George Cheeks announced this morning that the unprecedented success of Star Trek's new flagship shows Discovery and Picard has given the corporation a renewed interest in the franchise, but believes its future success lies in providing the franchise with a unified aesthetic. "Each of the previous shows was produced in a different era from the others, and often-times with limited budget and the visual effects technology of the time." Cheeks told our interviewer. "This has led to a franchise that lacks a cohesive appearance, which can be confusing for people trying to get into the franchise for the first time. To achieve this, we have contracted with Industrial Lights & Magic [ILM] to perform a complete reworking of the franchise from top to bottom, starting with The Original Series and The Next Generation - which, let's be honest, looks like what the Sixties and Eighties thought was cool, not any believable future. The original film footage will be enhanced with new computer-generated effects upgrading everything from the uniforms to the consoles, to provide a uniform appearance consistent with the now-iconic appearance of Discovery and Picard. This new aesthetic is unquestionably what the future WILL look like, and will give Star Trek an appearance that matches the future and will stand the test of time." Cheeks said work on The Original Series is nearly complete, and will be released to all streaming platforms by the end of April, replacing the original versions wherever possible. Home video releases on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray will follow later in the summer, along with the remasters of the 'TOS' films. According to Cheeks, The Next Generation will follow sometime in late 2020, with Deep Space Nine and Enterprise likely in 2021. When asked why Voyager was not mentioned in this timeline, Cheeks replied "eh, never liked that show. We'll get to it eventually, maybe."
