Gov. Doug Ducey announced that all students will be returning to their current grade when school resumes in August.

"With limited resources and lack of formal education instruction, we have decided that student advancements are not an option for Arizona students," Ducey said.

"While this isn't the outcome that many of us wanted, we are grateful for the partnership of schools around the state, who have stepped up to offer virtual and take-home learning opportunities for our students," Ducey said in a joint statement with Superintendent of Public Instruction, Kathy Hoffman. "It just isn't enough for Arizona students."

Ducey's announcements apply to public district and charter schools. Private schools must remain closed in alignment with federal guidance recommending closures, which means all students will start in August in their current grade.

Ducey went on to outline the summer program required by all parents to keep their students from regressing. "We further mandate that parents enforce continued learning in the home throughout the remainder of the year and over the summer months," Ducey said. He went on to state "We have partnered with police and military to support parents in enforcing 6-8 hours of daily study for their children." Boot camps for non-compliant students will begin as early as June 1 and be enforceable by local law enforcement.
