On Wednesday morning, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced on Twitter that the popular streaming site will temporarily suspend their services in the U.S. and Canada beginning April 3.

As millions of families are in self-quarantine and “Stay At Home” mandates remain in place until at least April 30, streaming sites are experiencing large spikes in the average time spent streaming TV and movies, which has jumped 36 in the past three weeks. With little else to do apart from baking and playing favorite board games, people are turning to streaming as a popular online pastime.

Recently, a massive surge of new and returning users has led to nationwide site crashes throughout the COVID-19 quarantine period. A multitude of complaints have been reportedly submitted to Netflix by users, who expressed their concerns about the handling of the frequent outages. Other streaming services, such as Disney+, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are also experiencing similar issues on their platforms.

Hastings reassured that the temporary suspension will result in “significantly improved” video streaming speed and will “expand [Netflix’s] digital servers” to “effectively prepare for the influx of viewers during these unprecedented times.” Although Hastings has not offered a time frame of how long the suspension will last yet, we can anticipate it won’t be long, as millions of streaming enthusiasts remain cooped up in their homes and constantly in search for entertainment.
