They say that it's better to be a "Has Been", than a "Never Was".

This is certainly the case with former Major Market Radio Personality TJ Kelley who, in recent years has been found selling Harley Davidson Motorcycles, helping his wife's company Coram's Steak and Egg in Panama City grow, sitting at the helm of the successful "Coram's On The Road", food truck and NOW has resurfaced with "The Vent", and Voices In Your Head" production.

We sat down with Kelley to find out how middle age is treating this once "Bad Boy of Country Radio", and how he keeps moving with so many things on his plate at once.

"Crown Apple and Bud Light", was his immediate reply. With that trademark chuckle, he continued, "I have a work ethic I picked up from my Dad, that's for sure. We learned a very long time ago that I would never be successful working outside, or with my hands. I just don't have the patience for it. I have a need to be in front of people, in whatever capacity that is. That's why radio and I got along so well."

"You wouldn't know it, but I'm painfully shy. Ted, or Teddy...my given name...is scared to death of people. TJ however, is the life of the party. Not afraid to let it all hang out."

When asked about The Vent, "It's easy", Kelley replied. "I still have so much to say, and radio has pretty much gone to hell as a whole. The talent is in the weeds, one jock can work in 27 markets and not in the way you think, where he's being paid to be in syndication, but pre-recording himself all across the country allowing the stations to keep the profits while this poor guy or girl stays on the point of laryngitis from spending 8 hours a day recording radio shows, and then having to be the Music Director, Program Director and Production Director all in the same for roughly what a Manager at Sonic makes unless you're in a top 50 market.

The Vent is MY PLACE to talk about the things I want to talk about, and to say the things people are afraid to say. I've never been scared to say it and shouldn't be as long as it's tactful and respectful. EVERYONE, regardless of origin, race or color is entitled the right to speak up."

Which brings us to Voices In Your Head. "Well, I've always loved the commercial production process. But again, as with the above example radio stations now have 2 jocks in the building, so NOW when you buy ads, especially in THIS market you get one of those two, or one of the sales people that really WANTED to be on air, or the secretary...maybe the janitor. I'm a different voice in a market that has the ability to punch through the ads being read by the same people over and over again is all, and I don't have to have a pile of money to do it."

"I love what I do now. I've always loved to cook, but was never going to make a living at McDonalds, even at 15.00 per house. (he laughs) I love being in that Food Truck, and being able to extend my wife's brand that she inherited from HER Dad."

He continues "But....I love to create theatre of the mind, and I think proper radio commercial production does that. You don't have a picture, or a video. You have to get into the listeners head and put them there with you, and whether it's The Vent, or Voices, I think we can do that very well.
