The impacts of Covid-19 have been felt around the world as it shakes up many parts of everyday life. Schools have recently had to adapt to the change in life, forcing some classes to operate virtually. This brings forward concerns regarding the safety of students in these classes.

Teachers all over the country have told horror stories of what has happened in their class as they try to teach virtually. A rise of “Zoom Trolls” have raised concerns as to how to keep our online attackers in online classrooms. Once these “Zoom Trolls” enter the class, they often play some disturbing and distracting sounds and videos that could negatively impact students’ ability to learn.

One Susquehanna Valley school that has been a victim of these attacks is Hempfield High School near Lancaster. According to teachers such as Matt Sahd, a math teacher at Hempfield, several accounts have been made of unwanted people joining their Google Meets and playing distracting sounds. According to Sahd, teachers have had a frequent account joining their classroom and “playing loud and obnoxious sounds and preventing my ability to teach”. This account, under the pseudonym “John Deere” has gotten into multiple teachers’ classes and played sounds to the class full of students. Teachers have been unable to locate the owner of the account, but continue to search for who this anonymous troll is.

These issues bring forward issues that teachers demand be addressed. According to the Hempfield teachers we asked, teachers want a more secure classroom that can help to prevent these trolls from joining their classes. Hempfield English teacher Katlyn Smith stated that “I just want my students to be safe and that I can feel comfortable with my teaching without being concerned with unwanted people joining my classroom”. Accounts such as “John Deere” have showed us that the online school classrooms aren’t as secure as we may think they are, despite being protected by codes and requested access.
