October 26, 2022: The president of the University of Kentucky voted Sunday to demolish the long-standing classroom building Whitehall. He posited that the building is symbol of oppression for many students taking general education courses. "General education is causing startling rates of depression and anxiety for freshmen, and we have to support our freshmen during this mental health crisis" Capilouto said to the administration committee. Instead, Capilouto proposes to replace the building with a new center for counseling and mental health saying it will create a positive environment and promote unity for students and the campus as a whole. He says the project will cost about 5.3 million dollars, but has no doubt that the university can raise these funds by raising certain rates in the next year.
